Purpose of This Page

As can be seen from my Marsh line on the My Results page, all of my ancestors were domiciled in England back to a least 1550 (I have a possible link back to 1380). Well before that time, England was subject to invasions and settlement by a number of cultures - Romans, Angles, Jutes, Saxons, Vikings, William the Conquerer (a Viking) etc - even the Irish got into the picture.  So, where did my ancient ancestors come from? On my page Some Distant UK Cousins, the suggestion was made that I am a descendant of Jute invaders. A search of the SMGF database was made to determine if the results would corroborate this suggestion.

What I Found

I first used my own results for the search. Only 28 70% or better matches were reported - USA-12, England-9, Denmark-2 Germany-2, Scotland-1, Russia-1, Protected-1.  The results reported in the chart below were those from European countries.. The two each from Germany and Denmark give support to the suggestion that Jutes or Anglo- Saxons were my ancestors. However, a further search was undertaken which was thought might add further weight to this theory. See A Further Comparison below

NOTE:  I have used the Sorenson calibration throughout this table.
To convert FTDNA scores to Sorenson scores: DYS394/19 add 1; DYS448 add 3:  Y-GATA-H4 add 1.
SMGF do not test for markers 464a-d
There were only results for 16 markers for Eur5

A Further Comparison

Since searching the SMGF  Y-database using my results as the base produced limited results, I tried a search using the common results as determined in the chart on my Some UK Distant Cousins page. I reasoned that if all those in the UK chart were from the same tribe that immigrated to England from Europe (i.e. Jutes), those common results  would yield a more accurate picture of from whence they came. SMGF reported 247 results with matches of 70% or better. I was able to access details of only 150 of these matches. The results are summarized as follows:

USA - 65
England - 30
Scotland - 6
Brazil - 2
Canada - 2
South Africa - !

Denmark - 15
Germany - 14

Netherlands - 3
Sweden - 3
Finland - 3
Russia - 2
Yugoslavia - 1

Protected families - 3

Counrties USA through Ireland are immigrant counries so far as this exercise is concerned. The predominant European countries are Denmark and Germany lending support to the theory that my ancestors were Jutes, or Anglo-Saxons. Countries Netherlands through Yugoslavia can also be considered immigrant countries because of their low numbers. The possibility that my lineage may go back to earlier Celtic migrations,  My Deep Ancestry  must not be overlooked.

An Item of Personal Interest

One of the Scottish results was for a Johnston(e) family of Dumfries. My wife is a descendant of the Johnston(e)s of Dumfries, which would  make us (very) distant cousins.
